Abstract

This article describes a real application of GPS for helicopter air navigation using digital cartography and the differential GPS version for increased precision approach. It is currently working and fully operational on a fleet of 17 helicopters that use the system on a daily basis with national coverage. The precision approach subsystem is conceived as an additional safety and training component, while the navigation subsystem is used for helping the pilot in routine orientation tasks. The overall project combines GPS technologies, radio communications, software programming, electronics, boarded computer systems and air navigation instrumentation. (A*)
