Abstract

This paper reports the relationships between driving behaviour and performance measures as investigated by a UK study using the Ageing Driver Questionnaire and a range of on-road driving performance measures. Two assessment drives were completed by each participant on two occasions. Driver faults were recorded in relation to thirty-five items. Unreliable data from one of the driving instructors were excluded. Results showed inconsistent predictions. Performance on a theory test provided the most consistent predictor of on-road performance: this may mean that improving knowledge of theory would increase levels of safety and driver ability among older people. It was seen that mental alertness is the key to continuing proficient driving performance. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116025.
