Abstract

Traffic growth is obviously important for planning road systems. This is especially true in cities, where growth is occurring within the confines of a semi-constrained spatial system. The Bureau of Transport and Regional Economics (BTRE) has recently completed an exercise in forecasting the growth in traffic expected in each of Australia’s capital cities over the coming decades (BTRE 2003). This paper presents a ‘short-cut’ methodology that allows an insight into how the authors see the various causal factors operating to produce traffic growth in our cities.
