Abstract

This paper describes the general concept of the KIDS prediction system. The prediction system is part of the Knowledge based and Intelligent Traffic Data Support System (KIDS). This is responsible for the generation of all the relevant data for the Rhine/Main Area Project for Integrated Traffic Management (RHAPIT) field trial. The aim of the RHAPIT field trial is to determine which kind of contribution the SOCRATES (System Of Cellular RAdio for Traffic Efficiency and Safety) guidance and information system can make to an integrated traffic management. The paper gives a survey on the SOCRATES Information Centre including the KIDS. The paper explains the concept of the KIDS prediction system which uses KIDS prediction system which uses both mathematical data and knowledge based approaches. The paper introduces the realisation concept of the KIDS prediction system and the KIDS evaluation approach within the RHAPIT field trial. It is concluded that the prediction system is a hybrid system which is able to provide the predicted information for several formats. Another conclusion is that the prediction system is able to provide reliable information on the traffic development. The system can also be used as a separate software tool.
