Abstract

A method for the short-term prediction of traffic flow volumes based on the spectral analysis of time series is described. The technique would appear to have important application for the prediction of traffic flow with periodic behaviour which can be characterized in terms of the model functions associated with a covariance data matrix. The method has been applied successfully to the prediction of traffic flow in the Mersey Queens tunnel and reasonable accurate results have been obtained.
