Abstract

Prefabricated highway edge drains, made from a polymer drainage core wrapped in a geotextile filter, are being used regularly by transportation engineers for both new and retrofitted roadway systems. Although these drains are acknowledged to be low in cost and rapidlyplaced, their performance is still being evaluated by long-term monitoring. One reason for this challenge is that their design is essentially empirical. What is intended to be a rational design procedureis presented that can be used in a variety of geographic locations and for a variety of edge-drain products. This paper appears in transportation research record no. 1329, Geocomposite pavement drain systems 1991
