Abstract

The goal of this report is to provide guidelines for safe prescribing and dispensing of medicinal drugs to patients who operate motor vehicles or other transportation vehicles. The report: describes how physicians update their knowledge about behavioural effects of drugs that affect driving performance; provides recommendations on how to improve the application of existing knowledge by using a graded level warning system; presents key information messages according to target groups (the patient-driver, physician, pharmacist, authorities with responsibilities in road safety); provides guidelines for physicians and pharmacists to prescribe and dispense the least impairing medicinal drugs; and, presents prescribing and dispensing information that will allow patients to be more aware of recognizing signs of impaired driving performance. The report also summarizes conclusions and recommendations.
