Abstract

This study documents the steps FTA took in responding to a directive from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to educate transit agencies on the potential safety risks associated with the use of prescription (Rx) and over-the-counter (OTC) medications by employees who perform safety-sensitive duties; occurrences in the transit industry during the decade following that directive; provides an assessment of how Rx/OTC medications are being addressed in the transit industry; presents the results of an analysis of selected accident data; provides a summary of how Rx/OTC medication use is being addressed in other transportation modes; and presents overall findings and recommendations for FTA’s next steps.
