Abstract

This Final Report covers all the activities and results for the whole project duration of PREVENT. The PREVENT work started with the review of bibliographical sources, in European and international level, having as an objective the safety around the roadwork zones. Analytically the description and the results of this review are presented in the Deliverable one entitled «Data Collection of Work Zone Accidents in Europe». In parallel with the bibliographic review concerning the roadwork zone safety from the side of the workers, another review took place, which focused on drivers’ behaviour and on the reasons of the accidents that took place in these zones. This bibliographic review concluded in a typology, which connects the type of road to the knowledge that the driver should have in order to adapt their behaviour and avoid accidents. The results of this study are presented in the second PREVENT deliverable with the title «Research on existing data for drivers' behaviour passing through work zones». After the classification of the relevant material in various thematic sessions and given the sources found —national specifications on which the material will be based —the educational material for the workers was created. With the same procedure and having reviewed all the appropriate driving instructions for passing safely through work zones, the training material of drivers was also developed. Both materials are included in the Educational Handbook of PREVENT as well as in the third and fourth deliverable entitled “Development of training material for workers, supervisors and inspectors associated with Work Zones” and “Development of training materials for drivers — training associated with their behaviour in passing through Work Zones”. The above training material has been elaborated also in an electronic form, the PREVENT e-tool, with automatic graphical tests for PC use. This tool presents the theoretical approach of road safety in roadwork zone and some standard examples of setting up a work zone. The last session of this tool includes graphical tests in order for the trainers to evaluate his/her level of understanding and to practice the knowledge that he/she has gained. The scope and objectives of PREVENT project and a big part of the educational material are also included in the promotional and educative video that has been developed. The results and products of PREVENT have been disseminated to a list of relevant experts and entities. A project brochure has been created and in the project’s specific web page http://www.hit.certh.gr/prevent/ all interested people can find extensive information and results of the project.
