Abstract

Road accidents are a major cause of death and injury to children. This report identifies the specific roles of the Department of Health, Regional and District Health Authorities, the Health Education Authority (HEA) and other agencies within the Health structure. In particular it highlights the need for the Health Service at various levels to provide information, personnel and expertise, to act as an educator and through the central function of the Directors of Public Health to act as advocate to identify needs and co-ordinate action. This work was commissioned by the HEA from the Child Accident Prevention Trust. Road safety experts in many organisations were consulted by the project team. Appendices include a list of useful addressesand educational resources for schools.
