Abstract

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in the United States for people ages 1 through 34, and alcohol is a major contributor to those crashes (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 1992). This article will review the extent of the drinking and driving problem in the United States, discuss major initiatives of the past decade aimed at preventing the problem, and examine some potential interventions to further reduce injury and fatalities from alcohol-impaired driving.
