Since nowadays within the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) applications areas, main emphasis and efforts were (and are) employed to improve driver safety, comfort, and optimise traffic efficiency without taking in sufficient consideration the vulnerable road users. The PROTECTOR project will be a step forward in the research and development of ADAS on the way of "zero accident" vehicles, by solving the functional and technological limits of several of the existing applications to improve safety for unprotected road users. In this paper the complete presentation of the PROTECTOR project is done in terms of benefits at social and individual level, emphasising the synergies of the new application with the well-known ADAS applications. In addition the technical introduction to the so called "Second generation sensorial system" is detailed being relevant among new and innovative ADAS functions.
