Abstract

Visitors to Atlanta, GA, USA in Summer 1996 will be able to test one of the world's most comprehensive Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS) in the $14 million Atlanta Showcase. This exhibition will bring public and private sector organisations together, to provide a seamless exchange of transport information for the public. This article describes a virtual journey through the services on offer there, and emphasises the project's approach to partnership. The Showcase demonstrates parts of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) vision that are available today. By following a fictional character who must commute daily to work, the Showcase demonstration describes typical methods of travel in Atlanta. Examples of features shown include: (1) use of a new dedicated transport cable television channel; (2) provision of alternative route information after notification of a traffic incident; (3) use of World Wide Web information on the Internet; and (4) transport information for visitors to Atlanta, to make their visit more enjoyable.
