Abstract

The basic question in the field of traffic assignment is the following: given a certain traffic demand between some origin and the respective destination, determine the percentages of usage for several alternate routes. The earliest assignment methods did not consider the effect of traffic flow on traffic assignment. A realistic method should consider the different behaviour of drivers under the given conditions. This paper is concerned with the relationships between empirical, deterministic and probabilistic methods for describing the behaviour-dependent choice of routes.
