Abstract

The importance of mobility for individuals is explained. A theoretical framework bringing together determinants of transport demand and supply, equilibrium in transport markets and short-term and long-term feedbacks, is outlined. As a starting point for the selection of topics for research current policy issues in the field of personal mobility are identified. After describing criteria for the selection of research subjects five promising high priority themes for research are chosen and described in terms of relevance and research questions. These are: (1) mobility in an aging society; (2) The Netherlands without cities; (3) travelling for fun: leisure and touristic travel; (4) the Electronic Super Highway and mobility; and (5) extreme congestion and mobility.
