Abstract

The safety of cyclists and moped-riders is influenced by the handling characteristics of the two-wheeler. It is necessary to find the best compromise between manoeuvrability and stability. Research into this subject, however, is in an early stage, nevertheless, it is already possible to make a number of suggestions for improving the safety of cyclists and moped riders. Cycle and moped design should be compatible with realistic users' needs. The dimensions of the two-wheeler must be suited to the dimensions of the rider; a good sitting position must be achieved. Furthermore, riding a two-wheeler makes special demands such as when turning, or riding and an uneven road surface. These special demands apply not only to the design of two-wheelers, but also to the road design and the traffic regulations.
