Abstract

The image of the motorcyclist is generally not an entirely positive one. The author specifies the various motives for motorcycling and the way these road users act as a group. Accident statistics show the relatively vulnerable position of the motorcyclist. Safety factors are related to the rider, his vehicle and the environment. The controversy between car drivers and motorcyclists is discussed from the view point of both partners involved. The influence of engineering, enforcement and education on the behaviour of motorcyclists is discussed. Driver training and, in particular, follow-up of driver training is considered.
