Abstract

For the purpose of national road planning, it is necessary to make long term forecasts of the demand for roads as represented by the overall volume of traffic in Australia, for use as control totals for the various less-aggregated forecasts used in identifying and evaluating road improvement projects. The forecasting procedures for vehicle miles of travel that have been developed are described. Difficulties faced in developing estimated of past traffic volumes in Australia are outlined.
