Abstract

This document is the Proceedings of the Road Safety Education Conference, held at York, England, on 15-16 June 1998. Its 18 papers are abstracted separately (see C 15021 - C 15038 (IRRD E101376-E101377 and E103837-E103852). It begins with a summary of the Keynote Address by Baroness Hayman, UK Minister for Roads. Six of its papers are on safer routes to school, including four case studies of European examples. Other topics covered by the conference include: (1) child pedestrian exposure and accident rates; (2) the Child Development Research Programme; (3) the role of road safety officers; (4) road safety education in schools; (5) the road-safety-linked database Rosalind; (6) pre-school traffic clubs; (7) training parents; (8) cycle safety; and (9) a community-based approach to the practical teaching of pedestrian skills.
