Abstract

This paper attempts to extend the current understanding of thoracic injury production by examining the results of 82 impact tests. The study strongly suggests that the severity of injury produced in the thorax is proportianal to the amount of specific energy that the thorax must absorb during an impact and inversely proportional to the area over which the impact energy is either delivered or extracted and the length of time over which this is all accomplished.
