Abstract

The PROMETHEUS objective of "intelligent cars on intelligent roads" can gradually be implemented on a co-evolutionary basis. This aim can be considered to have long-term validity. Apart from exceptional situations, the driver's responsibility throughout the driving process will and must be maintained. Additional measures are however needed to solve traffic problems. Examples relate to: (1) eliminating relevant infrastructural bottlenecks; (2) interlinking traffic systems, cooperate traffic management systems encompassing all aspects of a traffic system; (3) basic economic conditions; and (4) technological progress in all areas affecting the means of transport and their components and subsystems.
