Abstract

This paper describes the project for improving traffic security at Barcelona, Spain, which was opened in Autumn 1993. The project's purposes are to: (1) provide real-time information of the traffic system by direct vision and measurement of numerical parameters; and (2) display of information and guidance to the users of two main streets. The system has two control centres, of which the first supervises the whole area, and the second supervises a specific area. Each control centre has three types of computing equipment: (1) communications servers linked to field equipment; (2) workstations with high-resolution colour screens; and (3) peripheral equipment. Optical fibres and telephones are used and telephones are used for different types of communication. There is a variable-information panel, using light emitting diode (LED) technology, which can be used for full graphic displays for the design, transmission and supervision of traffic signal control plans. The design of the hardware, software and communications systems is based on Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and standards. The data communication network is organised at trunk network and secondary network levels, and there is also a video image transmission network.
