Abstract

This article briefly describes the accident reducing potential of the PROMETHEUS programme. Data about motorway accidents are presented first. This is followed by a brief description of the various ATT (Advanced Traffic Telematics) systems within the PROMETHEUS programme. These include: a) the provision of traffic information by RDS-TMC (Radio Data System - Traffic Message Channel); b) proximity information; c) route guidance; d) autonomous intelligent cruise control; e) vehicle lateral positioning; and f) emergency warning transmission. A forecast of the percentage of accidents prevented by each system is provided.
