Abstract

A research and development programme is reported, being carried out on behalf of the Finnish Ministry of Transport, to support national aims of safer mobility in road transport. Results presented in this paper are concerned with promoting safer walking and cycling as an attractive form of personal mobility. A number of research areas are also examined concerning safer infrastructure to attract cyclists by providing a safer and more comfortable cycle ride in urban areas. Other sub-areas examined include using safer safety helmets for cyclists and also improved maintenance of the infrastructure to promote walking and cycling as a part of daily travel. A number of international experts are listed after being appointed to examine other matters such as child seats for interchangeability between cars and cycles, and also improved cycle lights.
