Abstract

The European Network for the Promotion of Health-Enhancing Physical Activity is one of the seven European Commission's Health Promotion Networks. It promotes the health and well-being of European citizens by facilitating the development of health-enhancing physical activity (HEPA) policies. It has received funding from the European Commission's Health Promotion Programme since 1996. In addition to the 15 member states, the network also includes Estonia, Iceland, Israel, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland. This document is a follow-up of the European Charter on Transport, Environment and Health proposed by the WHO Europe and the European Commission. In the Charter physically active transport,i.e. walking and cycling, has been recognised as a new important element in the development of sustained and healthy transport. The European HEPA Network has furthered the Charter's principles into these strategic directions European countries can use in designing strategies and actions for the national promotion of transport walking and cycling.
