Promoting the use of the bicycle : improving safety is not enough.

Abstract

This paper deals with promoting the use of the bicycle and improving the traffic system, especially for cyclists. The two criteria that safety measures have to meet are mentioned. If lack of safety is looked upon as the result of the incompatibility of motor traffic and unmotorized traffic, the approaches of integration and segregation will overcome this incompatibility. It is argued why it is necessary to find new solutions for the design of intersections to offer cyclists safety and comfort at the same time, when it comes to promote the use of bicycles. In doing so, a draft for a clear and solid list of specifications is given.
