Abstract

For implementation of smooth traffic flow of automobiles, particular attention has been given to studies of transport demand management, and road networks have been improved to reduce traffic congestion. In this background, introduction of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has been investigated to provide it as a means of ITS application for reduction in congestion on superhighways or turnpikes. In the ETC system using microwave for roadside-vehicle communication, it is required to ensure a communication zone that is not affected by surrounding environment conditions. The authors have studied the environmental factors that may affect communication at toll gates and implementation requirements for ensuring communication zone unaffected by environment.
