Abstract

The visual environment (visual performance) of the driver in road transportation is important in order to ensure the safety, comfort and smooth traffic for the moving vehicle. The paper proposes the evaluation method of the driver's visual environment in road transportation, from the characteristic of the luminance distribution by using the CCD camera. In the past four years, some 70 tunnels were measured in Japan, Holland and Belgium and compared with this system. Using this system, a better visual pattern is proposed inside highway tunnels, and a future evaluation method about safety and comfort.
