Abstract

The surface texture of the road is one of the controlling factors in the development of contact between a tyre and the road surface. This paper deals with the measurement of textural depth of the surface. The apparatus described was designed for taking rapid and accurate measurements on the smoother types of surface, such as asphaltic concrete, where established methods were considered to be unsatisfactory. Results of tests to access the accuracy of the instrument are given.
