Abstract

This paper reviews present cost of road tunnels and the state of knowledge in the tunnelling industry, thereby considering the improvements in technology and reductions in cost which might stem from an increase in the use of tunnels. The problems involved and the benefits arising from the greater use of roads underground in urban areas are examined and road systems with or without tunnels are compared and discussed.
