Abstract

This report summarises both a desk top study and on/ off-road trials which investigated a number of technical questions regarding different properties of both dew resistant and graffiti resistant protective overlay films for traffic signs. The research focussed on overlay film costs, their life expectancy and any resulting maintenance/replacement requirements. Consultations and discussions with relevant bodies in industry took place as well as optical measurements on/ off-road of sign performance. Several recommendations for the use of such protective overlay films are proposed in the report together with a recommendation to update the relevant Highways Agency documentation on the inspection and maintenance of traffic signs.
