Abstract

This is the winning entry in the Australian and New Zealand section of the PIARC World Road Association 2003 Essay Competition in the category Essays of Young Professionals. Recent history has shown an increasing desire for mobility; with increasing wealth, population, urbanisation and car ownership the trend has been for increasing demand for travel and it would be expected that demand, on the whole, will continue to grow. This paper examines the key transport issues in achieving mobility while protecting quality of life. The essay then proposes solutions for the short, medium and long term. (Author/publisher)
