Abstract

A series of papers is presented on traffic safety and driver licensing programs affecting young novice drivers. The first two papers were presented by state driver licence officials on their states' provisional driver licensing programs at regional and national motor vehicle administrator conferences. The first describes the California program and the other paper describes and presents the evaluation results of the Maryland program. The next two papers summarize the safety benefit of certain provisional licensing activities and describe the graduated approach to initial licensing. They were presented by recognized research and evaluation experts at the provisional Driver License Workshop, held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, October 1986. The last paper provides the initial results of a follow-up study of the benefits of the NHTSA sponsored Dekalb County, Georgia, driver education evaluation project, reported at the American Driver and Traffic Safety Association annual conference, held in Spokane, Washington, August 10, 1987. An annoted bibliogaphy of selected abstracts is included. Also available from Supt. of Docs.
