Abstract

The knowledge, attitudes and expressed behaviour of a group of pedestrians regarding alcohol consumption and road use, were investigated in an exploratory study. Several shebeen customers from densely populated urban regions countrywide were involved. High-risk groups were identified. The objective was to determine the extent and nature of the drinking habits among pedestrians and the influence of such habits on traffic safety. Interviews were conducted with the help of questionnaires in order to compile a comprehensive profile of the pedestrian and the influence of alcohol on this profile. The results are discussed, and recomendations to lower the overall number of road traffic fatalities in South Africa are made.
