Abstract
The high accident rate of newly qualified drivers is discussed. Young drivers are more inclined to take risks, to overestimate their competence, and to be inexperienced. The mental and physical skills required to drive a car are outlined. The difficulties involved in learning to drive safety are considered. Differences in regulations and driver training systems in European countries result in similar national casualty totals. The design of roads to help prevent mistakes by inexperienced drivers, by providing appropriate speed information, the use of rumble strips, and anti-skid surfacing at hazards are recommended. Enforcement of safe speeds is also considered important.
