Abstract

The evaluation of intermodal transfer technical concepts must employ systems analysis because a variation of solution depends on the characteristics of various commodities and the relative importance of primary rail line haul, secondary highway line haul, terminal handling costs and customer costs. Van container economics are reviewed and some major but little know advantages in reduction of line-haul costs are highlighted.
