Abstract

Drivers have a dual task in traffic, the parts of which overlap only in part: to arrive at the destination of their trip, and to do so without collisions. One of the major functions of public lighting is to support traffic participants (drivers) in performing these tasks at night. An overall result is that good lighting compared with poor or absent lighting on major urban roads may yield a 30% reduction in night- time injury accidents.
