Abstract

The history of street lighting practice, the changes that have taken place in the design and the introduction of new materials are described. Variations in mounting heights and spacing of lighting columns are discussed with emphasis on their relation to the immediate environment. The advantages and disadvantages of wall mounted units, catenary lighting and high mast lighting are examined. Lighting practice for bridges, elevated roads, tunnels, underpasses and subways are discussed.
