Abstract

South Yorkshire PTE, alongside Atkins Wootton Jeffreys, have implemented an Internet-based public transport information system. This is linked to the existing public transport database. This facility is part of a county-wide policy aimed at providing quality public transport systems to reduce car usage and encourage public transport use. The system has demonstrated a positive shift in attitude towards public transport. In the long term this will lead to a mode shift towards public transport. This approach, which is readily transferable to any other regions, is to be extended through linkage with other local, regional and national service providers. It has been evaluated, using the CONVERGE guidelines, alongside other projects within the DG XIII-funded TABASCO project and demonstrates the importance of a synergistic approach.
