Abstract

Rome, Italy, has modernised its bus and tramway fleet, has plans for new subway lines and is taking steps to unify the politics of private and public mobility. ATAC SpA has responsibility for planning and controlling Rome's public transport, with operation the responsibility of Met.Ro SpA and Trambus SpA. The reforms carried out by ATAC SpA are discussed with respect to bus services and the AVM bus tracking system. ATAC SpA is due to merge with the municipally owned Sta. It will take over responsibilities for the parking sector in Rome, traffic lights and sustainable mobility including car sharing. A new battery-powered trolley-bus service will be introduced in the historic part of the city. Methane-drive buses will also be introduced. Two extensions to the tramway system are planned. The 'dream of ATAC SpA' is to introduce pollution-free public transport in the historic city centre and infrastructure planning to create a modern multimodal public transport network. A third subway line, Metro C, is due for completion in 2011. A new information system for public transport users has been developed. This is 'RomaRadio - the Tube Station', providing passengers of Metro A and B with real time information.
