Abstract

Alice Springs is the largest town in Australia without any conventional generally available, 'public' transport services (other than taxis). In depth household surveys were undertaken to assess the extent of transport disadvantage and the present transport difficulties encountered by residents. Introduction of a public bus service, a subsidised taxi scheme, and an expansion of the role of community transport services were evaluated. Introduction of a public bus service was the preferred option and has now been implemented.
