Observations of traffic flow downstream of traffic signals have shown that platoon dispersal by use of mathematical models cannot be satisfactorily described over the entire range of interest. The validity of such models, which are based on analogies to known physical phenomena, is limited in just that range which normally corresponds to the spacing of coordinated signals. Hence, a simulation model was developed which, for a two-lane directional roadway describes traffic flow upstream of, at, and downstream of a traffic signal. In the model, recent research findings concerning the behaviour of influenced drivers (approaching and following a leading vehicle) were considered.
