Abstract
British work on quality in lighting has been assisted by the use of appraisal as a study method. The paper describes the routine of appraisal and shows how the various aspects of quality can be identified and to some extent, specified. The roles of architect and lightingdesigner are examined and a design process is proposed in which the 2 professions can find a common language. An appendix to the paper shows how the design process can operate for a specific interior.
