Abstract

The development of an algorithm to enable the recognition by computers of traffic queues monitored by closed circuit television is described. Vehicle detection, and vehicle movement and spatial distribution analysis are all discussed. The article also describes an analysis of the effects of camera position upon traffic monitoring (for vehicle detection and speed measurement) in order to determine the range over which such a system could be expected to work, and to offer some guidance as to the best camera position.
