In 1986 and 1987 on a main road in Bielefeld wide- ranging measurements and investigations were made to test the suitability of cycle lanes at carriageway levels in front of the curb and in front of parked cars directly next to the flow of vehicle traffic, as an alternative to combined pedestrian /cycle paths or cycle paths on or behind the curb. The danger factors of both solutions are compared. Many of the dangers feared were shown to be insignificant.
