Abstract

This article reports on an emergent Australian initiative to improve railintersection safety. A collaborative project has been announced to develop and apply ITS technologies to reduce rail crossing crashes in Australia.It will bring together key stakeholder groups to focus on both immediate solutions using current technologies and long-term solutions employing purpose-built ones. This article discusses industry pressure, the problems identified, increasing crash numbers, rumble strips, driver education, and ITS technology.
