Just over a year ago a project called "Improvement of transshipment areas for intermodal transport" was initiated at the Delft University of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Transportation Technology Unit. This project aims to contribute to the solution of the future transportation crisis from a technical and logistical point of view. This project consists of three subprojects. Only some aspects from the second and third subproject are dealt with. The second one is concerned with the design of facilities for transshipment of rail bound containers at the Maasvlakte, Rotterdam in the year 2010. The third subproject wants to design a system for combined transport (road-rail) for transportation distances between 100 and 500 kilometres, including the terminals required to operate the system.
