Abstract

The overall objective of RANKERS is to develop new comprehensive, scientific — based and practical guidelines or recommendations for road infrastructure safety to enable optimal cost — effective decisions by road authorities in their efforts to promote sustainable safer roads and eradicate dangerous road sections. One of the main objectives of the RANKERS project was to provide a scientific catalogue of road infrastructure based countermeasures ranked according to the relation between their cost and effectiveness. This will help road operators to identify the best solutions for each road safety problem in order to maximize the benefits that can be obtained from the available resources. This deliverable consolidates, condenses and completes the scientific investigations which have taken place throughout the first three RANKERS Work Packages. Its ultimate objective is to present a user-friendly catalogue of best-practice engineering measures adapted to a range of accident scenarios investigated by the RANKERS consortium and ranked according to cost — effectiveness criteria. In doing so, the report will first recall a number of important considerations which have emerged from the theoretical work and field studies carried out within RANKERS. This deliverable therefore constitutes a common repository of knowledge gained within the project. (Author/publisher) This document is available at http://www.rankers-project.com/
