As of 1 January 2000 there were 3.7 million elderly people (`over-55s') in The Netherlands. A current overview of various aspects of their living conditions are given in the `Report on the Elderly 2001'. In this report explicit attention is paid to the situation of elderly members of ethnic minority groups. Where possible the living conditions of the elderly in general are compared with those of the 35-54 age group. The extent to which the elderly are better off in the nineties is also examined, and whether this is equally true for all of the elderly. Thanks to the availability of new data, the status of the elderly in residential care or nursing homes can also be examined. (Author/publisher)
