Abstract

This paper builds upon technical developments in repeated load testing by presenting test result data for a variety of unbound, modified and bound granular pavement materials. The three principal characteristics, namely: resilient modulus, permanent strain and rate of permanent strain have been evaluated. Suggestions are made for incorporation of these three parameters into performance based pavement material specifications. The paper identifies opportunities for rational design of granular pavement materials enabling selection on a fit for purpose structural basis. Furthermore, examples of opportunities for using what are otherwise considered inferior natural materials, materials reclaimed from demolition sites, asphalt pavement planings and industrial waste products (as stabilising agents) are presented.
